Curious tranny

Uh-oh!  Sounds like the dreaded 3 speed auto tranny self-destruct mode...at least from my son's experience in the '89 90 auto, which is the same tranny, I think.  Be prepared for rapid decomposition, then replacement (which he just successfully completed this weekend, with working used components).  Tom
