1982 4cyl diesel displacement?

I saw a 1982 4dr Audi diesel sedan destined for an Ohio scrap yard 
yesterday, and today I wonder if the engine under that crumpled hood is the 
same as the 1.6 liter diesel engine found in so many VW products.

Can anyone point me toward an answer?  The car is in another city and it 
would take a few hours to go and look.  The engine is a naturally aspirated 
4 cylinder type, mounted longitudinally. The sedan looks like an early 
version of a model 4000. Someone is interested in putting it into a diesel 
Vanagon to replace a  tired 1.6 diesel motor.
