I hate to keep getting drawn into this debate, but you just picked a
couple of bad comparison cars. The Viper and the Vette will keep up
with any of the European cars you mention here at the track. The Z06
Vette is a _nice_ car. I wouldn't take bets on one of these cars
vs. a Mustang Cobra R (2000 model) either.
This is all totally irrelevant because these cars appeal to a different
need, market or buyer. I don't know anyone who cross-shops a Viper
against an M5. That's plain weird.
The Prowler, IMHO, is a total poser POS. It's not fast.
Nit pick- the RS4 makes more hp than the E46 M3 or the M-B E55, I don't
know if you're talking about power:weight, but the RS4 is pretty good
in that regard as well, compared to the other German bruisers.
Back to Audis- the current S6 can't compete in the $60k+ market
(I think, judging by the cost of the S6 in Europe, that the S6 would
be significantly more expensive than the A6 4.2) as you are heading
very close to M5 and E55 territory, both cars that will crush the S6
in terms of acceleration and the M5 will beat it in handling.
IMHO, Audi should drop the 6.0L W-12 into the A6, give it a 6-spd.
manual transmission and make a proper S6. That would be sweet.

The thing about the mentioned American cars is that they are all 2 drs.
The RS4, M5, E 55, (new)M3, even CLK 55(I know 2dr) will keep pace with
(Mustang, Camaro, Firebird, Corvette, Prowler at the track or on road
and then ground them into dust when that curve comes around the
bend.(Track) straight line exceptions being Viper maybe, since each of
those cars gets up to 60 in mid to high 4 second range. Which is damn
good for any 4dr, including the Avante which has the least hp/tq.
Against a V10. Mind you these cars from Germany are heavier than the
Americans, loaded with features, safer, higher quality, higher
reliability, better resale value, etc.. The only down side being that
some of them may be limited to 155 mph, and none of them will be dusted
by the aforementioned American cars, atleast up to 155mph anyway. Now
where are the American 4drs?

Note to Audi:
Please give the S6 extra horses, then send it to the U.S with a 6sp
transmission, maybe, just maybe. multitronic
thankyou
