FYI, for the non-Shelby Mustang aware: (NAC)
Shelby GT350: 65-66 Basically a hot-rodded 66 Mustang Fastback, 289 c.i.
V8 - rated at 271 HP - racing homologation specials. This is the same
engine that was found in the original Shelby Cobra 289s (they first came
with 260s, but that ended when the 260 was superceded by 289s). Won the
SCCA Class B sports car championship from Chebby Corvette in '65. '65
Models built with a parcel shelf instead of back seat to get it rated as
a sports car.
Shelby GT350: 67-68 See above, Gen 2 Mustang. No longer a homologation
special, so extra "luxury" items made it more of a cruiser than racer.
Introduced the sequential turn signals first found in '67 Mercury Cougars
to Mustangs. Engine continued on in hydraulic lifter form as the 302 in
the final runs of GT350s which ended in 1970.
Shelby GT500 and GT500 K.R. Same as Gen 2 GT350 but with 2 engines,
depending upon year. Early 1967, before these engines became commodities,
came with the 427 side oiler that also came Shelby Cobra 427 models (the
car the Cobra legend is based off of). Later in '67 when 427's became
rare, they replaced the engine with the 428 Cobra Jet (more torque down
low, but no where near the same HP as the 427) which also saved
Shelby/Ford significant $$$. Don't know if they passed the savings
onto..... whaddya think!?!?!). Continued with this engine thru the last
generations of GT500s in 69-70, but these cars were more Ford than Shelby
and were more cruisers than anything else. They were heavily overstyled
Mustangs.
The Mustangs used in the remake of "Gone in 60 Seconds" were modified
Shelby GT500's of the 67/68 vintage. There were several of them (there's
an article in Road and Track or Car and Driver this year) which means
that the remaining 2nd Gen Shelby Mustangs are worth just that much more
since there are now fewer of them that are all original. I'd be willing
to bet a tuned and re-suspended GT500 would be more than able to give a
540i a good run for it's money.
