Audi vs. Subaru used cars

I read somewhere that the configuration of the engine in the engine 
compartment is such that there is no space for the steering "stuff" on the 
left hand side so the cars have to be kept right hand drive. However I think 
being a right hand drive does not make it illegal(not sure of US laws) it 
can still be driven, a lot of Rolls Royces in the United States are Right 
hand drive and I think they are legal.
However again as mentioned earlier, I am not sure about the laws.
