It just occurred to me that I've mentioned a special tool for inlet
manifold removal but I don't think I've ever described it.
I've often struggled with inlet manifold screws on 10V I5s, but the real
trigger was having to remove the inlet manifold on a car fitted with a
non-Audi exhaust manifold. Our friends are so proud of their product
that they've cast their name in raised letters on top of it, reducing
the clearance on the path to the inlet manifold screws dramatically.
The tool I made consists of the long arm of a good quality 6mm ball end
Allen key (I use Beargrip) with the short arm cut off with an angle
grinder. The long arm is cemented into a 6mm socket (FACOM) with a
two-part 'liquid steel' epoxy (Plastic Padding) to make a tool exactly
141mm long. I use a 1/4" drive socket and a long-handled 72-click
ratchet - also FACOM.
Inlet manifold removal now takes less than 15 minutes on average -
less if the car has recently been dismantled.
This tool has been so successful that I've made others - one a 5mm - to
deal with getting at the warmup regulator screws past the dipstick pipe,
and a longer standard 6mm Allen (not ball end) to tackle the steering
rack retaining screws in the front right wheel arch on more modern
Audis. Oh, and a couple to shift injector seats.
