Clutch job front clunk 87 5kTQ

The clutch on my wife's 87 5ktq is slipping. I am going to buy a clutch kit 
from Blaufergnugen and install it myself. I have read the Bentley account of 
the removal and replacement, are there any caveats from the BTDT on the list?
For a long while we have had a clunking in the front end of the 5ktq. Last 
week we purchased a set of Yokohama AVS dB from the Tire Rack and had them 
installed and an alignment at a local auto service shop. I did not mention 
anything about the noise. When we got the car back whalla! the clunking was 
gone, vanished, quiet. I haven't called the shop yet to see if they just 
found something and fixed it or if it was just related to the alignment. Any 
ideas?
