There would be MAJOR fabrication involved to mount the I5 longitudinally as
it's about twice as long as the boxer. It's most likely too long to fit
transversely, and even then fitting a transmission for it would be nearly
impossible. My daily driver is an '82 Vanagon (216,000 mi, with about 100k
on the rebuild), and swaps have crossed my mind- a VW VR6 is very tempting :)
Eurospec offers a kit to swap a Digifant VW 1.8L inline 4 from the
Golf/Jetta into the Vanagon, and it's pretty reasonable when compared to the
$4,000 + required for a full rebuild of the VW motor. European Car did a
review of it a couple of years back, and it was quite favorable. I think
they can also swap the smaller I5 from the Eurovan into a Vanagon as well.
The 1.8 is FAR more reliable, has adequate power (115hp I think, and similar
torque), and won't blow off it's cylinder head as the boxers tend to do with
theirs. The ability of the stock Vanagon tranny to handle 10V turbo power is
questionable as well. Good luck whatever you do!

Hey,I USED to have long hair, and wasn't a hippie- no one believes you when
you're a longhair musician driving a VW van in high school though! :)
