Actually, the I5 does fit. It's an available option on south african 
vanagons, and several people have done it as a retrofit. Check out 
the archives on www.vanagon.com. Ken Wilford over there was involved 
in selling a kit to install an audi I5 in the vanagon, although I 
think he only offers I4 kits now. Also, AFIK, the eurovan I5 is more 
or less the same as the audi I5. Actually, it has greater 
displacement, but shares many block dimensions, because people on 
this list speak of building big bore audi engines utilizing eurovan 
blocks, cranks, etc...
