Mysterious Clunking Returns?!

I chased a clunk in the front of an 85 CGT for months, with many new parts.
What I finally found was that the bolts connecting the control arms to the
subframe, although in perfect condition, and torqued (with new bushings),
were a smaller diameter than the sleeve in the bushing. I replaced them with
bolts that were the same diameter throughout their length (the stock units
have a smaller stem than the thread OD) and the noise went away.
I was already so sick of the problem I gave the car to my 16 year old
daughter for her daily ride as it's punishment. She was rear-ended at an
intersection a few months later, and the source of my anguish is now
_crushed_! I did strip the new components from it before they dragged it away.
I hoped it was an object lesson to the other Audis in the garage, but the URQ
evidently didn't pay attention.
FWIW, all 5 Audis I have owned, have had front end noise sometime in their
life with me. Someone tell me again why I own these things.
