        My understanding is that VAG bought some kind of partnership so that
Ford and GM (the only other bids) wouldn't take over.  Supposedly if VAG
bought BMW outright, they would be the worlds largest Auto maker as well as
being the only Auto maker to currently produce a vehicle for every
Motorvehicle format.
