Lap timers for circuit racing

Next year I return to the fray - yippee! I am considering building my own
in-car lap timer as most race circuits have a permanent beacon along the pit
wall which outputs an infra-red beam. If anyone out there has already done
this and can offer advice this would be appreciated, particularly with
respect to common IR transmission standards and operating range.

My tow-car is a 1987 series 200 Avant!
