Fuel Pump sound? - 86 5KS

What a disappointment! Not only was the fuel pump screen not clogged, but
the whole darn fuel tank looked brand new. Everything looked brand new, on a
vehicle with 192K miles (87). Methinks a PO has reworked this. Obviously,
this is not the source of my problem. It turns out that I can't hear the
fuel pump anyway, unless I'm outside the car or have the windows rolled
down. The sound comes from the bottom of the tank, where the sound is
conducted through the gasoline to the fuel tank and thence to the air.
And, I screwed it up and will have to reopen the durn thing to reorient the
sensor (constantly reads empty now). Boo hoo. Of course, there's no way to
know this until you put some gas in it the next day.
Finally, the most interesting thing about the whole experience was the
feeling of dipping my hands into warm gasoline to get the pump out. Wierd.
Incidentally, if you do clean off the screen, say with a brass brush, don't
try to blow the loose stuff off. There's still gas in there even though you
can't see it. You could get it all over your face. :)
