Martin,
When you start the car, do you see an "airbag" light on the dashboard
light? Assuming that bulb could be burnt out and per Bentley Manual:
Wiring diagrams indicate the airbag started to appear in 89 100s built
after 10/88. Look on the DS front door for a sticker, it shows the
production date. My 89 100 (production date 10/88) has no airbag.
If your 100 is built after 10/88, to verify the existence of the airbag:
- remove the carpeted console panel in the DS footwell and look on
the transmission hump, below and just forward (towards engine),
from the climate control head
- if you see two boxes (big one and smaller one just forward of the
big one - they should be mounted between the rear seat air ducts)
those are the airbag control (big) and reserve units (small).
If they're there, you need to disconnect power to the control unit (a
fused connector wire) before removing the steering wheel! Get/borrow a
Bentley manual before you muck about with the airbag and be careful.
