Oh, this has been bashed up and down on the Vanagon list (as I'm sure Chris will
testify too). The reason that the EV is expensive is US import taxes on trucks.
The Eurovan is the only truck on sale in the US that is an export. ALL others,
no matter if they are of US or Japanese origin, are built in the US. Thus they
avoid import taxes. As far as I understand, VW would avoid it too if they
started a production line in Puebla, MX. That factory is crowded with the
NBeetle production though.
