Snow Tires with Quatrro

I think I'm missing something here.  It's okay to use grippy
high-performance tires in the summer, like the standard A4 sports package
Dunlop SP8000s, but using real snow tires in the winter will cause drive
train wear?

Obviously these is a part of this puzzle I'm lacking.  Can anyone help a
newbie to understand this?
