Air Bag light won't go out on my 89 200tqa

it used to come on immediately after starting car and then go out after 2-3
seconds.  i thought it was some sort "auto check".  well yesterday it came
on and stayed on.  where do i begin troubleshooting and should i be
concerned that the airbag may deploy at any moment?  thanx.
