Steering Noise 93 90CS

Can anyone help me diagnose a steering noise on my wife's 93 90CS?  The noise 
is a squeak of varying duration and occurrence when turning the steering 
wheel.  It has existed for the year that we have had the car.  It occurs only 
when turning the steering wheel, not when the wheel is held in a turned 
position.  

That seems to rule out a power steering pump in my opinion, but not 
necessarily a steering rack problem.  On the other hand, it may be a 
mechanical binding problem in the steering wheel mechanism itself.  Any BTDT 
experience or other thoughts on the problem?  Any way to rule out the 
steering rack?
