Mark,
The fix may be easier than one might hope. Check out Blau's Tech Tip re:
Power Window Failure at

.htm
Blau touts this fix as working on 1984-94 5K, 1C, 2C, V8. I believe it
works on pre- '89 Type 44's but I know it doesn't work on an '89 100/200.
The harness is different on the newer car and there isn't any slack, at
least not on my 89 200Q. I've copied the relevant material below.

"Often the cause is broken wires in the driver side door jam area. How can
one fix this problem, and if one's Audi is older than five or six years,
prevent it from reoccurring?
What we're going to do is move the existing section of wiring in the
door jam area into the door itself. There is
enough extra wire underneath the dashboard area to accomplish this. To
gain access to the extra wiring, remove
the knee panel directly under the steering column and the side kick panel
that it mounts to. When this is removed,
you will see the wiring harness up underneath the dash going through the
door jam area and then into the door.
Loosen the reusable tie straps underneath the dash area. If there are any
broken wires, now is the time to repair
them. Move some of the new harness underneath the dash that has never been
flexed (due to the doors opening
and closing constantly) and move it into the door jam area, resulting in
another five or six years of trouble free
window operation. The flexed and worn out wiring harness in the door jam
area now is moved into the door itself,
never to be flexed again. In most cases, the door panel needs to be
removed. Secure this section with tie straps so
that it does not interfere with the door stop mechanism. "
