WARNING: long long long rant, boring boring story, don't read. :)
Hmmm... Accross from Armstrong in Gladstone... That wouldn't
happen to be "Import Auto Connection" would it? I've checked out
three cars there, ironically, all were "the owners car"... One
was an MB 111 coupe ((drool)) and another was a '91 90q 20v...
I almost bought it, but the sales guy really drove me crazy... I just
couldnt go through with it. Also he was a jerk about going down on
the inflated price, saying that "it was 18 thousand bucks last week
so this is a REAL STEAL.. I cant go down any more than this."
First of all, test driving the car, the stick was almost impossible to
get into gear... He said "oh, thats the Audi clutch... They're all like
that".. then we went over a speed bump and the car bounced up
and down for the next 10 yards...
I said it feels like it might need new struts.. He said "The struts
in this baby are just fine, it feels like a million bucks to me" and
proceded to attempt convincing me the car was worth $13000
w/ 135k by pulling the original window sticker out of the glove
compartment. "See how much this car was new?".. Because
the price of the car nearly 10 years ago with 15 miles on it matters
SO VERY much now.
The guy acted like he was an expert on Audis... But then what
blew me away was he showed me the differential lock and said
"this is the quattro"... I'm like "OHHH, THATS THE QUATTRO!!
WOW!!! HOWS IT WORK?!" And he tells me that it's a front
wheel drive car, but when you push this little button in the console
and the green LED is lit, you are now driving with FOUR WHEEL
DRIVE!!! So I switched it on, and he said "feel that difference in
acceleration? amazing!" then he quickly switched it back off
and said "You should only use the Quattro in the rain" At that
point I'd had enough of him, so I asked him when he works so I
could come in to "negotiate", with the intention to come back the
next day he would NOT be available... So I called a few days later
to make sure the car was still there, and a man said he'd check
and call me back, but he didnt know, because it's "the owners car".
For some reason he then called the salesman I had been dealing
with at home, who called me back and said it was in the shop
getting new shocks, and it would be back in about 15 minutes.
I said I didnt want to come out (lived in Estacada at the time)
unless the car would be there.. he assured me it would be there
by the time we arrived... We get there, and guess what, it's
not there... "Zack", the salesman I was disliking more all the time,
arrived on the scene about the time we did with horrible horrible
horrible breath.
He then tries to show my girlfriend and I a number of cars that
we were entirely uninterested in. "I'm not into Acuras" I said.
He says "You mean you like Audis but not Acuras? Thats crazy,
theres really no difference, they're both step-ups." I asked him
what he meant by that, and he says "The Acura is a step-up
Honda, and the Audi is a step-up Volkswagen.. betcha didnt
know an Audi is just a volkswagen! Ha Ha Ha!"... I glared at
him and so he quckly stops laughing and finally just tells us that
the 90q is at Ed's Mufflers down the street getting the new
shocks, so he went in the back room and came back, saying
that he called Ed's Muffler who said if we go have lunch, it would
be back on the lot by the time we return. We decided to go to a
matinee instead, to give plenty of time for a muffler shop to do
struts on a Quattro. We then drove by the lot and saw it still
wasn't there.
So we went to Ed's Muffler and there was the car.. So pretty in
pearl with black leather. The mechanic said that Zack had never
called and that from the beginning the deal was they would have
the car back by the next day at 6pm!! So i said forget it...
++ A completely unsatisfying experience! ++
I also saw a good deal of damage to the runners at Ed's where it
was up on a lift, looked like someone had driven over a curb, and
totally mangled the aftermarket skirts and added a little rust to
the body. (It was dark when I saw it the first time) Marked down
from 18k to 13k.. BOY WHAT A STEAL!
Came back a few months later to look at the 65 250S coupe (I
think thats what it was anyhow) and it was in really crappy
condition. We asked this salesman about it and he looked at
us and said that it was the owners car, and "isn't for sale to you
boys"...
So we started to walk off, and then he said "But you know,
for the right price..." so my friend Jordan, for kicks, offered him
to trade straight accross for his 99 jetta with 10k miles, despite
the fact that we had already decided there was too much work
to be put into the car to consider a buy from a dealer.
The guy laughed at us and said "this cant be bought with no
volkswagen, boys"... I figure the car, since it was a rare classic
and all, despite its crappy condition and mangled interior, was
probably worth a good $5500... give or take 3k depending on
mechanical condition. We then pulled out in the 73 280SEL
4.5 that looked really bad-ass and the salesman started running
across the lot waving his arms like a fool as we pulled out. So
we stop, and he says "this is a nice car you got here." And we
agreed that it was nice and sped off, with the tires sqealing and
the V8 screaming.. hehe...
++ A completely satisfying experience! ++
Anyway to make a long story short, I hate that place so it's too bad
they frequently have nice cars for sale. I'll definitely check out the
urq if i'm in that part of town anytime soon though... :)
