Hey folks,
I haven't been on the list for a little while, but I'm getting ready to
retire my quattro and thought someone on the list would be most likely to
put it to good use rather than just ride it (the rest of the way) to its
grave. As the subject indicates, it's an '87 5000 S Quattro. Charcoal grey
exterior, light grey/black interior. The odometer hasn't worked in some
time, but realistically it's just over 200k miles (say 205-215). My
step-father bought the car new and had it until '97. He traded it in for a
Nissan 4x4, and when I found out, I was at the dealer the next day at dawn
with my checkbook, and I've had it since then.
It was in an accident once, back in 90 or 91. Front ended a tree at about
25mph. Insurance took care of everything, and it was serviced by a
reputable "Audi authorized" repair center. No other accidents of any
nature.
List of known problems:
1. Power steering pump leaks. I have a replacement pump that I haven't
found time (and weather) to replace yet.
2. Headliner is sagging.
3. Sunroof doesnt' stop in the closed position. It opens fine in both
directions, it just doesn't stop in the middle. Just a switch problem I'd
guess. All other power window switches function properly.
4. Passenger side window makes grinding sound.
5. Climate control. Well, it needs work, but I don't really know what. The
AC compressor is gone, but I got heat out of it all winter. It just doesn't
regulate temperature. My guess is a bad sensor, but I don't know. It will
move the flaps and blow out defrost or floor or whatever you tell it, it
just doesn't seem to be able to figure out what the actual temperature in
the car is, so it always blows hot.
6. Hood. It needs paint and new hood struts. It stays up fine when you
open it, but you can tell it wants new ones. And the paint is a result of
it being repainted (just the hood) back in 90/91.
7. A new noise started last week that I haven't figured out yet. I'm not
sure whether it's engine or drivetrain, and it's not always there. It might
just need a new timing belt and water pump.
It's got what are, if my memory isn't failing me, the so-called
"sought-after" low gear ratio manual transmission. The body and chassis are
sound. I don't consider myself qualified enough to say "the engine is
sound", but it's never let me down. I'm getting rid of it because I moved
this past December, and I don't have access to tools or a place to work on
it anymore. I also don't really need a snow vehicle anymore since I'm
within walking distance of work, and I'm probably going to get something
extremely fuel efficient and underpowered.
I'm located in the northern part of Virginia, just under an hour from D.C.
and about 20 min. from Winchester, Va. The car has never lived outside of
Va., although it has left Va. on vacation here and there.
So... anyone looking for an older 5kq with those "sought after" gear ratios?
It's been a great car for the last 14 years, and I'd rather see it go to
someone who will appreciate it, even if it's for a parts car, than send it
to die in a used car lot.
Drop me an email at bpirie at rma.edu if you want to keep traffic off the list
(which I'm sure some would appreciate), or post here and I'll read it.
Brendan
