calling all slushbox specialists:

Listers with long memories may recall that I lost a
-_second_ differential last summer on the car. The
speedo sensor gear was literally melted.

It appears that when the tranny was swapped from the
donor car to "this" car that Redline syn diff oil was
used. Assuming the tranny-to-diff seals were changed
when the swap was done (I paid for that service & got
old parts in a bag when I picked the car up), the only
seals that could have leaked were the axle flange
seals. My observations at the scene of the crime bear
this out, as well as long after the fact.

Once in Atlanta, a tranny specialist took the car for
a drive. He uttered "governor" but really did not
want to work on the car. Thought I should just be
done with it.

The car will go up to about 15 mph before it starts
shaking, etc. Off the line it did not appear to be
too bad.

Months have gone by and my champaigne colored freind
has sat and gathered dust (pollen dust as of late).

Meanwhile, I started looking over the details of the
C4 slushbox and note that it has no electronic
governor. Must use the speed sensors and ECU
programming to do the work.

However, I also cracked open the 5k manual and looked
at the governor. It looks like it comes out easy
enough (unless it is fried).

Could one do the following:

-throw some gear oil into the diff

-run the car as a test w/o governor and see if the
shudder goes away? It would be obvious.

-run the car w/o governor period?

-find boneyard governor off a 44 or other VAG slushbox
from the period? Will they interchange, albeit with
different "shutdown" points?

-if this experiment works and I can drive the car, I
would be willing to take the driveshafts off and
replace the drive flange seals. According to the
manuals, that appears to be doable without ripping the
tranny+diff out of the car.

I would like to try and save my friend, but I don't
want to go broke in the process.
