Shiftless 4kcsq

I've got an 87 4kcsq sitting in the parking lot of a dorm at CSU with a
shift lever that appears loose and will not put the tranny into gear.  The
description comes from a young gal with marginal mechanical ability and I
have volunteered to try to make repairs.  The last 4k with similar symptoms
that I worked on was a front drive 84 and the problem was a plastic bushing
for the shift linkage on the tail of the tranny.  A couple bucks, 10 minutes
and it was fixed.  What am I most likely looking at here?  I'd like to have
the most likely part in my pocket since it is a relatively long drive up
there and no source of parts on the weekend.  Any BTDT?  I really want to
fix this problem quickly and at low cost since I convinced her Dad, a Toyota
man, to buy the Audi for her.  Thanks in advance.
