I always smile when I hear our American listers talk about Europe as it was
some kind of an automotive heaven.
The only European country with no speed limits on highways is Germany and
it only applies to selected fragments of some Autobahns. Everywhere else
there are speed limits and they are enforced with automatic phototraps and
fast, unmarked cars with video cameras. And don't count on the officer
giving you a warning. Get caught driving 30kph over limit in Sweden and
you'll be walking for next couple of months.
The reason diesel cars are so popular is because people are sick of gas
prices. Ask Tom Nas how many gas cars in Holland drive without spare
wheels, because the spare wheel well is occupied by a LPG tank which the
owner installed to offset gas prices. Don't get me wrong, I think modern
diesels are really great engines and I would be the first to buy an A4 V6
tdi. In fact, even the new Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI would suit my needs fine,
thank you. Unfortunately, all I can afford is a magazine to read about
these cars, because our Europe Union-aspiring, know-it-all-better,
we-have-overthrown-the-communist-regime-so-we-deserve-respect goverment
takes *** 80% *** of my salary in form of various taxes to either spend on
things I don't need or simply waste. So here I am, working as a computer
professional, yet driving a 15 years old car and living with my mother,
cause there's no way in h*ll I could afford an apartment for myself.
Well, seems like I had to vent ;-)
