Probably you have simply overdriven the amplifier inside your
head unit.  Most head units have a max output of something like
3 or 4 watts per channel (those that are marked "high power" usually
about 12-15 watts).  Unless you have an outboard power amplifier,
don't expect to reach very high volume levels.  "Clipping" occurs
when you try to make the amp pump more power than it could, and
the result is very distorted sound.
