Coupla years ago I bought a 1995 Geo Metro with 47,000 miles at an estate
sale for $1,500, mostly because the widow was a friend of my wife's and she
didn't want to be bothered selling the car.
Three cylinder, two door, and I honestly don't recall if it was standard or
automatic, although I do know it was white, and had a tow hitch on it
(delusions of grandeur!) (And yes, the tow hitch was on the back . . . )
Anyway, at 50 mph or more it was a noisy, buzzy, gutless shitbox, and the
best way to relate my feelings in driving this thing in any kind of traffic
was it was like landing a hang glider at Atlanta/Hartsfield, and trying to
sequence in between the 747-400s roaring down upon you.
Around town, however, it was actually quite pleasant. If you didn't need to
go over 40mph (and realistically, on most errands you don't need to), the
car was nimble, easy to park because it was LITTLE and would fit anywhere,
and it used almost no gasoline. Once I used it to move a refrigerator on a
(small) utility trailer, and the 'fridge was almost as big as the car!
I could see where these cars would be quite popular on the little islands
in the Caribbean, or in places where gas is really expensive and there are
no freeways. Unfortunately, I feel this just isn't enough car for highway
use in the US, the UK, or in most of Euroland, even though people buy them
and drive them anyway.
Best Regards,
Mike Arman
