ATF to quiet lifters?

Yeah I tried it, and I dont know if I would try it again. When I bought my last
Audi (92 100 2.8q Avant), the valve lifters wre tikking extremely loud, and the
oil in the crankcase looked like tar. So I poured about ½ quart of ATF into the
oil and drove it for 2 minutes from the FLAPS to the garage where I was to
replace the oil. While the lifters quietened down immideately, the long term
effect was no good. The carbon deposits around the piston rings and valve guides
washed off causing the car to drink oil like a 2-stroke engine. So I doubt I'll
try that again. At least not that much ATF into the oil.
