My AC hasn't worked for some time, but I recently
replaced a couple of obvious leeking seals and am
planning on recharging the system soon.

My question is this... (car is '89.5 200tq)

I was running thru the CC diagnostics the other day,
and the display indicated that the AC clutch was
activated, only it wasn't actually engaging.
Additionally I have a engine rpm related "rattle"
noise that I suspect might be the AC clutch. How can
I confirm this? Could I just supply 12V+ to the AC
clutch lead directly and see if it engages?

Yes. That's how you diagnose clutch problems. Just do it briefly to see if
it engages. You shouldn't run the compressor without freon (R-12 or
R-134a).
