To chime in on what others have already answered...  Drive by wire makes
possible a big reduction of mechanical hacks around the throttle.  Since
the throttle butterfly is now ECU controlled sans a direct linkage to
your accelerator, things such as idle stabilization, cruise control,
traction control, ESP, speed limiter, throttle close damper characteristic,
etc., can all be done in the ECU without extra hardware.  Makes things
much cleaner under the hood!
