Indeed a major PITA. Haven't done the Quattro ones yet but have often
struggled with MK2 Golf rear callipers. These don't have the hex, just a
couple of indents. You can turn them with a pair of needle nose pliers or
similar but you have to press at the same time, tends to put a bit of a hole
in the hand! Nowadays I use a C-clamp and a pair of water pump pliers around
the periphery of the piston. Wrap in paper or something to protect it and
don't let the pliers slip down so far that they will mark the part of the
piston that goes into the seal.
