My sister had an 87 Passat Trend (based on CL) that had a 1.8 with 4-speed.
Basically, C and CL had 4-speed, GL and GT had 5-speed. Unfortenately I don't have
the Haynes manual for this one here right now. But these cars indeed had the
4-speed right up to the end of production.
