Hmm, the right tool takes about 20 seconds, a weird brake tool I have
takes 10-20 minutes.

And that can take hours! Yuck, btdt with a 4kq after my brake tool had
been destroyed by weevils.
I tried the grease and pound trick, I suspect it does depend on your
having a steel rod of just about the exact right diameter... perhaps a
spare tranny input shaft would be perfect? Also, as you say, swinging
room could help a lot.
