California smog police are waiting...?

California acknowledges 49 state cars, and there's no problem smogging them,
*provided* that they were originally equipped that way. We see a bunch and
have never had a problem, as long as everything that's required is in place
and functioning. Though I haven't had firsthand experience with it, I
wouldn't imagine that a 49 state engine in a CA car would be a problem as
long as it's the same engine, and is equipped with the corresponding CA smog
equipment. In most cases I think the only differences lie in the bolt-on
stuff/control systems, ie air pumps, different ECUs, etc... Even the
referree isn't going to check the engine # against the VIN to discern if it's
a 49 state block. If it's the same engine, but doesn't match #'s, it's just
a replacement as far as he's concerned. It's when there are little things
like extra camshafts, an extra bank of cylinders, etc.. that they get
suspicious :)
