California smog police are waiting...?

California acknowledges 49 state cars, and there's no problem smogging them, 
*provided* that they were originally equipped that way.  We see a bunch and 
have never had a problem, as long as everything that's required is in place 
and functioning.  Though I haven't had firsthand experience with it, I 
wouldn't imagine that a 49 state engine in a CA car would be a problem as 
long as it's the same engine, and is equipped with the corresponding CA smog 
equipment.  In most cases I think the only differences lie in the bolt-on 
stuff/control systems, ie air pumps, different ECUs, etc...  Even the 
referree isn't going to check the engine # against the VIN to discern if it's 
a 49 state block.  If it's the same engine, but doesn't match #'s, it's just 
a replacement as far as he's concerned.  It's when there are little things 
like extra camshafts, an extra bank of cylinders, etc.. that they get 
suspicious :)
