There are things I will probably get wrong or not know, but I used to
own one (an '83) so I can try to fill you in a bit at least. I will
bolster my memory with fresh info from audiworld.com's files to make it
more complete though.

The engine is 2144 cc (bore 79.5 x 86.4 stroke)
compression ratio 7.0:1
power 130 hp @ 5400 and torque 142 ft-lb @ 3000 - yup, no more than the
10:1 compression 2.3 n/a motor had a few years later!

The engine has the sodium filled exhaust valves, and the block uses oil
squirters for the backside of the pistons.
The turbocharger was oil cooled, and there are two oil filters.
I think boost ran to about 1.4 bar - the car came with an analog gauge,
and it would only peg to 2 bar when the wastegate stuck shut - which was
also when it was *really* cold out - wheeee!
As I recall there was an auxiliary radiator like the 2.3's usually have.
No intercooler on those cars.
No afterun fans or pumps, but they had the injector cooling setup
similar to the later turbos.

They had an incredible exhaust note, quiet but with a very deep bass
rumble. Maybe this was because the one silencer was very simple - just
a perforated pipe in a box full of dampening material.

(They were all automatics, with 15" wheels with 205/60's and four wheel
disc brakes)

It was a wonderful car, perhaps the nicest balanced Audi I have ever
driven, stock at least. The turbocharger would glow a pretty cherry red
after a good hard run.

The fuel management system was plain old CIS-lambda, ie identical to
what came on the n/a 5k and the coupe of the time. There were no knock
sensors on this system.

There is no reason to think the block was any less rugged than any other
I5 iron.

As I see it, your idea is workable... sort of. The block has the oil
squirters, which is good. it is a "small bore" which means you could
bore it out to get it nice and round and up to 2.2 or 2.3 liters by
changing pistons. But then you would have to decide which pistons to
use to maintain the appropriate CR and combustion chamber shape.

The head you want to use might be better off with the sodium filled exh.
valves (the sodium cools the valve).

perhaps you would be better off working from an MC head and block and
guts, since they all go together already. Less weird decisions to make.
