does a 98 a6 avant share the same a/c programmer as type 44's?

i suspect my climate control problem ( recirc function inoperable and fresh
air enters cabin while driving w/ fan off) is realted to the a/c programmer.
does my 98 a6 avant have an a/c programmer like the type 44's (a black box
w/ vacuum hoses and a motor to the bottom right of the glove compartment)?
thanx in advance. does anyone have a good used one for sale?
ANSWER:
I think it's the same as in my 97 A8. I too have just troubleshot a similiar
type problem, however, when in AUTO (not in recirc mode) the flap that would
let fresh air in would shut if it wasn't set to something like 64F (couldn't
throttle the position, it had to be fully open).
PROBLEM: Fresh air intake motor/resistor (actually just the resistor, but it
is part of the motor) was bad. You need a VAG 1551 to read the codes (there
will be a fault code) or Uwe Ross' software/cable to hook into your PC
(that's what I got). You can find it at www.ross-tech.com . It's awesome.
But if you want to try a stab in the dark, open your hood and look at the
air box in the center of the engine compartment where the suction for the CC
system is. If it's like mine, there will be a small motor with a resistor in
it on the left forward side of the box. You'll see an electrical wire coming
from it. Take the two phillips head screws off of the cover (this cover is
about 3" x 3" and you'll expose the motor. It has two more screws holding it
in. You'll see the fresh air flap to the right of the motor in the box. Take
the wire harness off the motor, gently hit the motor a couple of times on
the ground and hook it back up. I bet it will work then.
I got a replacement motor, took the old one off, determined it was the wrong
motor, put the old one back in, and everything is fine. This is a short term
fix, what happens is the resistor gives the wrong feedback position to the
computer and it can't control it. Replace the motor, with my discount it's
$100 with tax.
The same thing happened to my 91 200q but with the heater control valve. If
you break the connection, clean the contacts and put it back in, it works
for a while, I guess like the old window switches.
I'm curious to know if this does it for you, I bet it will.
