A/C / Heater weirdness

Hey List,

Just wondering if anyone has experienced the same problem.  The car is a 
1990 100.  As soon as the A/C or heat is turned on there is fairly good drop 
in engine idle.  I realize that when either are switched on the rad fan 
motor is functioning as well, but the idle will keep having these dips in 
speed every 7 seconds or so while the heat or A/C is on.  Anyone have 
anything similar?, is there some malfunctioning thermo switch that can cause 
this kind of problem?
