4KQS clutch travel, gear selection

New to the list as a poster....
I've been browsing the archives and think I may know the answer to my query,
but here it is anyway:
My '85 4KQS has exhibited a "low clutch pedal" for the nine months I've had
it, meaning that the engagement/release occurs low to the floor, but the
pedal springs back nicely. Over time, it's seemed that in order to engage
1st or 2nd gear smoothly, I'd have to pound the pedal into the floor! Since
I'm no stranger to VW/Audi shift linkage, I've also suspected that it's
needed adjustment, and my gear selection and the "low pedal" issue have been
coincidental. My conclusion at this point is that both scenarios are
likely: the clutch release/engagement doesn't help the gear engagement issue
and the linkage needs adjustment and refreshing of bushings, etc.
The car just turned 90,000 miles, and the clutch does not slip. 3rd, 4th,
and 5th are easy to engage; reverse can be a bit notchy.
So.... are some of you thinking that my slave cylinder sounds ill? I've
had some suggest that adjusting my clutch cable (or replacing it) would
solve the pedal issue, but I'm not convinced, given the quattro's type.
This is driving me crazy. There are days when I've actually pulled the
cover off of my track-prepared (but, amazingly, street legal) GTI 16v just
to get some shifting relief.
I'll use more abbreviations, etc. next time. Feeling frustrated and
long-winded. ;-)
