Yup, sounds like a slave cylinder to me, though it could be the master,
too. Couldn't be the cable, the car does not have one. You've either
got cables or cylinders... not much point in having both!
and you're right, the two problems, while probably exaggerating each
other, are separate issues sort of. It will be tougher to get into the
lower gears if the clutch is not fully engaging, but play and difficulty
actually finding the gears is more likely the linkage.
