Open the IC (there is a procedure in the archives. BTW, IMHO, use
something much more substatial than Masking Tape on top of the wood as
protection. The IC scratched right through the tape when I did this.
Anyway, get your hands on contact cleaner/ deoxidizer such as Stabilant
22 or Deoxit Red or Gold and go after every connector on the IC. Note to
self, there are alot of them, and there are little trap doors that allow
access to circuit board that is behind covers and plastic and such. The
cover is hinged, but requires removal of two screws to release it.

Can't help there. The ladyfriend has made the very same suggestion,
although in her case she didn't say what, just "new".
