Well, a hybrid-powered Audi is not a new concept.  Even though the press
seems to tout the Toyota Prius and the Honda Insight as some sort of
breakthrough, it was Audi that presented the "Audi Duo" more than 10 years
ago at the Geneva Motor Show.  Basically, it was a type-44 Avant quattro
with a conventional engine up front, and an electric motor integrated with
the rear differential.  Either one of the power units can be engaged as
required.  Two further generations of the Audi Duo models were also
shown, the last one based on the 1996 A4 Avant quattro.

I don't know if any Audi Duos made it to production, but perhaps the
advent of the TDI engine had made the Duo a less favorable technology.
