Hi Chris. I have BTDT with my 86 5KTQ. First I told my wife that she
better start taking care of her side of the car. That did not work....:)
I think you should seriously consider replacing the whole line. You could
just cut out the affected part and replace it with high pressure rubber fuel
line double hose clamped in place, BUT.. my experience has been that you
will create more leaks at other grommets while working on it. Note that if
you do splice in the rubber fuel line, it will no longer fit in the grommet.
For me it started with one leak, which I fixed, then sprung another one at
another grommet, which I fixed, but in the process another one went because
of wiggling the line while working on it. Bottom line....the fuel line was
shot and I just went ahead and replaced the whole thing with new line. I
got some brake/fuel metal line from NAPA and cut it to length and bent it to
shape. The connections at the fuel accumulator in back were so severely
corroded that there was no way it was going to unscrew so I cut off the line
and spliced it to the new one with some HIGH PRESSURE rubber fuel line and
double hose clamped on each end. If you do this, make sure you specify that
you want HIGH PRESSURE fuel injection line as 'they' say that the regular
rubber fuel line will not stand up to the pressures in the system.
One other thing, it was a real PITA to try and bend the fuel line from the
fuel distributor down the firewall to the underside of the car and then
along the bottom to the fuel tank, so I actually made a short fuel line from
the engine compartment and down the firewall. This terminated in a threaded
fitting, which screwed into my new fuel line running along the bottom of the
car. This was much easier.
I replaced both my supply and return lines while I was at it.
Good luck
Stephane
