I have to admit I wasn't a big diesel fan myself, although my friends
kept talking about how great they are.
This is until I rented a Mercedes A 170 cdi this summer. A tiny car,
with a tiny diesel engine.
The engine was incredible. It pulled strongly from over 1000 RPM in
every gear. It sounded like a diesel only when idling. As soon as I
stepped on the gas the typical "diesel" sound went away. It was also
quite fast, it did 170 km/hr, and when driven within the speed limit, I
got 5.2 l/100km gas consumption.
