"Looking to augment my non-existant interior lighting in the 4kq."
Brendan,
Interior light in the 4kq is so bad I think it would rival the lousy type
44 turbo headlights. I was able to make a vast improvement using the light
from the sunroof switch panel of the type 44. This was a standard light
installed in the pre-1989 type 44. 1989 and onward this light was still
made, but in cars with electric sunroof it was combined with the sunroof
switch into a single unit which would not fit the 4kq. These lights are
Audi p/n 443 947 105C - "Reading Light". The "c" denotes color black.
Other colors may be available. These lights fit perfectly in the same
recess the 4kq lights are installed in and they produce a >lot< more light.
Plus, under the headliner on the passenger side there is a hidden cutout
where a second light could be installed. A picture of one of these lights
installed on the passenger side of my 4kq can be seen at

While the cutout is already there, the wiring isn't. You'll need to figure
out the best way to run the wire. What I did is run it up the A-pillar...
pop the plastic pillar
cover off first, then under the headliner and behind the door gasket as
neatly as possible. There may be an easier path that someone else could
suggest. I don't remember where I tied the wire into the circuit.
Here in the U.S. nearly all type 44's came fully equipped with all sorts of
interior lighting, including these "reading lights", so these lights are
readily available from old parts cars. Installation may be easier if you
get the wiring connectors and a few inches of wire along with the light.
They use a 10W bulb. I suppose these could also be bought from the Audi
dealer.
I suspect this lighting upgrade would also work on an Urq or Coupe.
Warning ... that freebie web site has a limit of 2Mb data transfer per hour
and the picture is about 100kb, so after 20 people look at it inside of an
hour, the rest of you will get a message that the site is unavailable. Try
again later.
