The wiring overheats because Audi runs the power to the lights THRU the
switch instead of using the switch to trip a relay that takes the power to
the lights. I bought a replacement wiring harness connector AND a new
switch from Carlsen (see the audifans.com vendor page), and they even
managed to round up three of the little wiring connectors that go into the
harness end (the plastic part does not include the connectors
inside). Mine was melted to the point it was impossible to get those three
little wires out without cutting the wires. Besides, the wires were stiff
from overheating for a couple inches away from the connector.
