Warm engine idle fluctuation

i have seen this funny little quirk on my and a friend's 90q, 88 and 89 model
years.
in both cases, the shorter of the two ISV hoses had split and collapsed on
itself.
now, i haven't a clue as to why exactly this causes the idle to go bonkers,
but
replacing that approx. 6" hose solved the problem in both cases.
