If you have "Comprehensive" insurance coverage (commonly called "fire and
theft") on your car, and if your windshield were hit by a rock on the
highway or a vandal while parked on the street, the Comprehensive coverage
would pay to replace your windshield. In most states, there is no
deductible. Depreciation (or betterment) will not be taken into account.
Insurance companies readily pay to replace windshields because there is a
strong public policy that motorists should not drive around with their
vision impaired. You call your insurance company up, and you get a new
windshield. Usually they do not even want to see it. They'll just send you
to one of their auto glass companies with whom they have established a
relationship. Some states and insurance companies are different, but most
times you don't even get a bill.
Windshield replacement on a Type 44 is difficult. You might not want just
anybody doing the job. Check the archives for BTDTs. It seems that in the
installation, it is easy to scratch/gouge out the paint/galvanizing which
quickly leads to rusting around the windshield.
