Uh Oh, Grinding Gears Confirmed

Well I took the new '01 Allroad for a little spin today. It grinds like
a mother when downshifting into 3rd and 2nd, even at lower rpms. It shifts
fine in all other gears, though 1st gear is a little notchy to get into at a
stoplight. 2nd gear grinds quite badly when coming from 3rd, though if I
rev match it's alright, small grinding noise if I am not perfectly on the
ball. This is poor for a car that has 700 miles on it to say the least. I
can safely say it's not the clutch or hydraulics because all other gears
shift fine and the clutch feels proper throughout the stroke, no lightness
or notchiness. The shifter feels alright, a little balky a clunky, but
again all the other gears seem just fine.

Mum is chatting with the head tech at Danbury Audi and he has set up an
"emergency" appointment on the 2nd. Surely they can't miss this one. I am
inclined to ask for a spanking new transmission after the linkage and clutch
are both checked. I'd rather not have some monkey lad tearing into a brand
new box and replacing bits. Oh well here we go again!

Cheers!
