I have seen one 5KTQ where (as you describe it) there was a lot of crud
between the shield and the tank.  On this particular car, the crud was a
mixture of fine moist dirt which caused the bottom of the tank to rust out.
I hope this didn't happen to your car.  Its a good idea to remove the shield
periodically & clean out the crud out.
