I bet you're blowing boost out the Michelin Man hose, between the
intercooler at the throttle body. Have you removed it, and checked
it for leaks? You can compressit between your hands or
something and see if it holds the pressure. Inspection on the car
really isn't enough, and it comes off easy enough. I had similar
symptoms on my '88 5kcstq, and a new hose fixed it (I found the
leaks too).
I think it's possible to overspin the turbo in this situation, since the
boost signal to the wastegate controlling the turbo isn't accurate to
the rpms of the turbo.
