I have done it a coupla times, using a wire brush'd wooden handle (like
a piece of 1 x 1) as a "drift", and probably a dead blow hammer, wielded
gently. I worked my way around, back and forth, keeping the seal
relatively square as it went in.   Go in til the seal is flush with the
crank and block, as you say.  Both cars still hold oil (whew!).

I used a piece of Teflon as an installing shim (you have to protect the
inner lip of the seal while driving it in, so it doesn't catch) the
second time as I couldn't find the one that actually came with the first
one I did.
